The size of the internal clearance during the operation of rolling bearings has a great impact on bearing performance such as fatigue life, vibration, noise, and temperature rise.(HONBbeairng02)
Therefore, selecting the internal clearance of the bearing is an important research item for the bearing that has already determined the structural form and size. The so-called clearance is the amount of clearance between the bearing’s inner ring, outer ring and rolling elements. That is, the movement amount when one of the inner ring and the outer ring is fixed, and the other ring moves in the vertical or horizontal direction. The radial and axial movements are referred to as radial clearance and axial clearance, respectively. Generally, in order to obtain stable test values, a specified measurement load is applied to the bearing housing to measure the clearance.

Thus, the measured clearance value is larger than the theoretical internal clearance (radial bearing also called geometric clearance) by the amount of elastic deformation (approximation amount) caused by the measured load. For distinction, it is sometimes called measurement clearance. Therefore, the theoretical internal clearance must compensate for the amount of increase in clearance caused by the elastic deformation to determine the small amount of elastic deformation of the roller bearing, which can be ignored. Generally, the clearance before installation is specified by the theoretical internal clearance.
