The clearance of a rolling bearing refers to the maximum radial or axial activity of the other ring when one ring is fixed, so the clearance is divided into radial clearance and axial clearance.

When rolling bearings are assembled, their clearance should not be too large or too small. The clearance is too large, will cause the number of rolling body bearing load at the same time to reduce, so that the load of a single rolling body increases, thus reducing the bearing rotation accuracy, reduce the service life; Too small clearance will increase friction, increase the heat generated, aggravate wear, and also reduce the service life of bearings. Therefore, many bearings should be strictly controlled and adjusted during assembly.

Preloading is to give an axial force to the inner or outer ring of the bearing when the bearing is assembled to eliminate bearing clearance and make the initial deformation at the contact point of the rolling body with the inner and outer rings. Preloading can improve the stiffness and rotation accuracy of the bearing under working condition. For the bearing with large load and high rotary accuracy requirements, most of them work under the condition of no clearance or even a small amount of interference. In this case, it is necessary to pretighten the bearing during assembly.

Clearance adjustment and pre-tightening are usually used to make the bearing’s inner ring and outer ring for appropriate axial relative displacement method to complete.

From the above technological concepts, it is not difficult to see that the bearing capacity and rotation accuracy of bearings can be improved and the service life of bearings can be improved by adjusting the clearance of rolling bearings. But at the same time, it will aggravate the friction of the bearing and increase the heat value. Therefore, good lubrication and heat dissipation must be ensured when adjusting the clearance or pre-tightening. If the adjustment is improper or the lubrication is poor, it will in turn increase bearing wear and reduce the life of the bearing.
